Learn how to request help from the ACLU of Puerto Rico and submit a civil rights and liberties complaint.
We do not take walk-ins, provide general legal advice, or offer emergency assistance. We also cannot guarantee a phone, text, or email response.
Our legal work focuses on high-impact issues that affect many people and can lead to lasting change.
While we do our best to review every message or request for help, our legal team is small and our capacity is limited. The ACLU of Puerto Rico is a nonprofit organization focused on defending civil and constitutional rights across many areas, including freedom of expression, immigrants’ rights, reproductive freedom, racial justice, LGBTQ+ equality, and the rights of people who are incarcerated.
When you contact the ACLU of Puerto Rico, your message is reviewed by a member of our legal team. We look for potential legal issues involving violations of civil or constitutional rights — such as freedom of speech, discrimination, due process, or government overreach.
If your concern falls within our areas of work, we may follow up to gather more details or refer your case for further review by one of our attorneys. If your issue does not meet our criteria, we will do our best to provide information or resources that may help you find assistance elsewhere. Please know that this review process takes time, and while we cannot take every case, each message we receive helps us understand the challenges facing people and communities in Puerto Rico.
As lawyers dedicated to social justice, our legal team believes that everyone deserves an opportunity to seek help and protection under the law — even if the ACLU of Puerto Rico cannot directly take their case. That’s why we’ve compiled the list below of organizations and programs that offer free or low-cost legal assistance across Puerto Rico. These resources can help with civil rights, immigration, housing, labor, family law, and other legal matters.
Please note that by accepting this complaint or request for information, the ACLU is not undertaking your legal representation and is not responsible for meeting any statute of limitations restrictions in your case. You should be aware that there is a limited time when someone may pursue legal action, sometimes referred to as a statute of limitations. You may want to contact an attorney for advice about preserving any rights that you may have.
